Dr. Theodore Friedmann, professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, has been named as one of three recipients of the 2015 Japan Prize. She could not be deterred—not by slavery, not by illiteracy and certainly not by naysayers. Sojourner Truth was a woman of strong conviction who used the power of her words to stand up for women’s rights and combat slavery. In recognition of her contributions as a suffragist and abolitionist, a life-size bronze sculpture of Truth was unveiled Jan. 22 at UC San Diego. Read More »


UC San Diego Expands Sexual Assault and Violence Prevention Services

After 25 years of successfully helping students, UC San Diego’s Sexual Assault and Violence Prevention Resource Center (SARC) is expanding its services to provide crisis intervention and advocacy to faculty and staff, in addition to students. Roger Reynolds’ 80th Birthday

UC San Diego Celebrates Roger Reynolds’ 80th Birthday

Roger Reynolds joined the UC San Diego music faculty in 1969 and has since mentored generations of young composers, won a Pulitzer Prize (1989) and been a leader in exploring ways to harness new technologies for musical purposes. Feb. 3-5, the department of music will celebrate his 80th birthday with a concert, symposium and multimedia installation. Read More »

Sociology Department Founder Joseph Gusfield Dies at 91

Joseph Gusfield, founding chair of the sociology department at UC San Diego, has died. He was 91 years old. Gusfield was an internationally renowned sociologist and one-time activist, whose analysis of social movements remains a foundation for the study of contemporary “culture wars.” Gusfield is also known for his seminal work on drunk driving. UC San Diego to Host Symposium on Trajectories in Black Studies on Jan. 30

The UC San Diego Black Studies Project will host the UC-Wide symposium & public gathering, Trajectories in Black Studies: Interdisciplinary Foundations and New Formations, Jan. 30 in Price Center East. Open to the public, the symposium will feature an interdisciplinary lineup of Black Studies scholars from throughout the University of California system. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will feature a morning and evening plenary session as well as four afternoon breakout sessions and a concluding reception. Learn More »
