UC San Diego student entrepreneur wins $10,000 Microsoft award to develop app for social change

Sneha Jayaprakash, a sophomore at UC San Diego, is passionate about two things: computer science and social change. As part of the 2013 Microsoft YouthSpark Challenge for Change contest, she developed a winning proposal for a mobile app to engage students with volunteerism and social issues—and received a prize of $2,500 to get the project going. Now, with an additional $10,000 awarded by the Microsoft Imagine Fund last month, Jayaprakash is getting the opportunity to turn her idea into a successful startup. Read More »

Chancellor Reaffirms UC San Diego’s Commitment to Access, Inclusion at Community Forum

Fulfilling a promise to the local community, Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla returned to Southeast San Diego Thursday to convey how community feedback has helped shape UC San Diego’s strategic plan. Last year, UC San Diego hosted two Community Town Hall meetings to seek input about strengthening pathways to higher education for underserved students, increasing the campus’s presence in South County, and meeting the community’s economic and workforce needs. UC San Diego Welcomes the Campus, Community to April 5 College Planning Session

UC San Diego is offering “College Prep For Future Tritons,” a free event on campus for middle and high school students and their families to learn how to plan for, get accepted to and pay for college. Emphasizing that it’s never too early to think about college, the April 5 event offers information about the college prep necessary so that qualified students who want to go to college can, regardless of income or ethnicity. After all the work they put into the online course they inaugurated in the fall, Pavel Pevzner, a professor of computer science and engineering, and instructors Phillip Compeau and Nikolay Vyahhi have concrete evidence that it was a success even beyond the impressive number of people who signed up for the course – more than 30,000 in all. Campus Sexual Assault Resource Center Develops Innovative New Programs to Enhance Student Safety

UC San Diego’s Sexual Assault & Violence Prevention Resource Center has been successful in developing innovative and proactive violence prevention programs for the campus community. Nominations for the Annual Sustainability Awards Sought

The UC San Diego Advisory Committee on Sustainability is accepting nominations for the annual Sustainability Awards. In celebration of Earth Week at UC San Diego, April 21-25, the advisory committee will recognize individuals and groups (teams, departments, units, student organizations, etc.) that have made our campus more sustainable. Nominees must be closely affiliated with UC San Diego and have worked outside the capacity of their job descriptions to advance one or more of the Advisory Committee on Sustainability's goals.
