These words of advice were delivered to about 6,000 new freshmen and transfer students from alumna Dr. Coleen S. Sabatini at UC San Diego’s Convocation on Sept. 21. The ceremony marks the official entrance to the campus community for new students.

Welcome Week
Sixth College freshman Breanna Allen is a San Diego native who is the first in her family to attend college. Over the summer, Allen prepared for the start of fall quarter at UC San Diego by taking part in the Triton Community Leadership Institute, a three-day residential program geared toward incoming first-generation college students that helps them navigate the university prior to the beginning of the school year.

For Matt Leslie, a doctoral student at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, science communication is a passion. Leslie was one of 30 graduate students to participate in Inspiring Research: Creative Strategies for Communication. The pilot workshop was developed as part of Gradvantage, a new initiative that aims to prepare UC San Diego graduate students for careers outside of academia.

UC San Diego’s 10th annual California Native American Day celebration kicked off Friday with an opening ceremony featuring a blessing, traditional bird singing and creation story workshop. Other upcoming events include an undergraduate research symposium, a Native American film festival, a powwow and more throughout the 2015-16 academic year.

Michelle Madsen Camacho has been chosen as a fellow of the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows Program at UC San Diego for the 2015-16 academic year. The yearlong program helps ensure that future higher education leaders are ready to take on real-world challenges and serve the capacity-building needs of their institutions. Participants are given the opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture, policies and decision-making processes of another institution. Camacho formerly held two postdoctoral fellowships at UC San Diego’s Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies and Department of ethnic studies. She is currently a professor of sociology at the University of San Diego.
