Triton Alumnae: Making an Impact, Elisa Quintana, ’01, Physics

From the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, alumna Elisa Quintana sifts through vast amounts of data looking for subtle clues that could suggest the presence of a new planet. Before this, working on the Kepler mission at NASA Ames, she led the team that made the discovery of the first Earth-like planet within the habitable zone of another star. Yet, Quintana didn’t always see herself becoming a NASA scientist. She had a rocky start at school before transferring to UC San Diego, where she found a mentor in former astronaut Sally Ride. Nearly 600 UC San Diego staff members will be recognized for achieving years of service milestones at the 50th Annual Service Awards Ceremony, which will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel Ballroom.
