January 26, 2016 — Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System report data suggesting that e-cigarettes are toxic to human airway cells, suppress immune defenses and alter inflammation, while at the same time boosting bacterial virulence. The mouse study is published January 25 by the Journal of Molecular Medicine.

January 25, 2016 — The University of California, San Diego’s New Writing Series (NWS) is anything but new. In fact, the series, originally rooted in poetry, is among the longest running programs in the state, dating to the early 1970s. Each quarter the Department of Literature hosts the “new” writing series, and this winter’s series, which began Jan. 13 and runs through March 2, takes a transnational focus with guest writers John Gibler, Lorena Gomez Mostajo, John B. Washington and Marivi Blanco. The next presentation, featuring Washington, takes place Jan. 27, 4:30 p.m., in the Visual Arts Presentation Lab on campus.

January 22, 2016 — Selective oxidation plays a key role in the production of compounds widely used throughout the chemical industry. Now, according to a new study using advanced computational resources including SDSC’s Comet supercomputer, these materials and other compounds, such as those used to make polyester resins, could undergo a new catalysis process that uses less energy and generates fewer by-products than current methods.

January 22, 2016 — A team of biologists and biomedical researchers at UC San Diego has developed a new method to determine if bacteria are susceptible to antibiotics within a few hours, an advance that could slow the appearance of drug resistance and allow doctors to more rapidly identify the appropriate treatment for patients with life threatening bacterial infections.

January 21, 2016 — Patty Maysent has accepted the position as CEO of UC San Diego Health, the region’s only academic health system. Her appointment was approved by the UC Board of Regents and will commence January 21, 2016.

January 21, 2016 — The Health Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Division of the San Diego Supercomputer Center is participating in a multi-million dollar project with City of Hope, a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and other organizations to create a research cyberinfrastructure that includes a secure, cloud-based data management platform.

January 21, 2016 — More than 125 UC San Diego campus community members came together Sunday to make a difference in the lives of homeless men and women in San Diego. At Father Joe’s Villages—San Diego’s largest homeless services provider—volunteers helped with much-needed painting, repairs and cleaning as part of UC San Diego’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
