With only a few hours notice, Veerabhadran Ramanathan, the climate and atmospheric scientist at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, found out that he would be meeting Pope Francis and would have only one minute to speak to him as the joint workshop of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences concluded on May 6.

For Pauline Foster, community philanthropist and longtime supporter of the University of California, San Diego, giving $7.5 million in support of the new cancer care hospital at the UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center is a gift from the heart—both her husband and brother died of cancer. The campus announced today that the facility will be named “The Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care,” in consideration of her charitable contribution.

UC San Diego opened its doors to thousands of newly admitted transfer students and their families on campus Saturday for Transfer Triton Day. In the same tradition as Triton Day, which is targeted toward admitted freshmen, Transfer Triton Day brought together the entire campus community to encourage admitted transfer students to accept their offer of admission to UC San Diego for fall 2014.
