October 19, 2017 — University of California San Diego anthropology professor Thomas E. Levy is back in San Diego after participating in the fourth International Conference on Dialogue of Civilizations, held in Ahmedabad, India and co-organized by the National Geographic Society (NGS), Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and India’s Ministry of Culture.

October 17, 2017 — A noted scholar and a world-leader in microbiome research, Rob Knight, Ph.D. will take guests inside the human body and share the dirt on the microbiome, the focus of his new book, published in June 2017. On Tuesday, October 24, Knight will discuss Dirt Is Good: The Advantage of Germs for Your Child’s Developing Immune System, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. in Geisel Library’s Seuss Room. The UC San Diego Library talk is free to attend and open to the public. A reception and a book signing with Dr. Knight will follow. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event from the UC San Diego Bookstore.

October 12, 2017 — An international team of researchers, including UC San Diego psychologist Gail Heyman, suggests that one way to reduce implicit racial bias in young children is by teaching them to distinguish among faces of a different race. A touch-screen app developed by the team shows promising results.

October 5, 2017 — The Holocaust Living History Workshop (HLWH) at the University of California San Diego once again launches a year-long series of educational events that will focus on the theme, The Possibility of Renewal: The Shoah Between Past, Present, and Future. This year’s programming, presented by the UC San Diego Library and the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Program, will unearth how renewal is possible in the wake of genocide, shed light on what it means for a defeated people to resurrect its past, and explore the roles of memory and justice in the process of renewal.

A group of political scientists at the University of California San Diego are expanding the conversation.

September 18, 2017 — A team of archaeologists from the University of California San Diego and two leading Israeli universities has wrapped up a three-week expedition to document two major sites in Israel using the latest in 3D scientific visualization technologies.

September 14, 2017 — An international team of researchers reports that when children are praised for being smart not only are they quicker to give up in the face of obstacles they are also more likely to be dishonest and cheat. Kids as young as age 3 appear to behave differently when told “You are so smart” vs “You did very well this time.” The study, published in Psychological Science, is co-authored by UC San Diego developmental psychologist Gail Heyman.

September 7, 2017 — Helping to solve complex urban problems in a way that puts people first, the UC San Diego Design Lab has launched a city-wide civic design challenge called “Design for San Diego,” or D4SD for short. The challenge seeks to harness the power of crowdsourcing and human-centered design to address concerns with transportation and mobility in San Diego.

September 6, 2017 — A new report from the San Diego Education Research Alliance at UC San Diego sheds light on official graduation rates for San Diego Unified School District’s 2016 graduating class, the first cohort to graduate under new “college prep” requirements.

August 28, 2017 — On Aug. 29, UC San Diego archaeologist Tom Levy leads an expedition for the first-ever desert land-and-sea integrated cyber-archaeology project to be carried out in Israel, and the expedition will be flying The Explorers Club flag (as Levy did in 2011 with an expedition to southern Jordan).
