Scripps scientist warns that growing industrialization threatens the deep ocean’s ecosystems

The deep ocean, the largest domain for life on Earth, is also its least explored environment. Humans are now encroaching more vigorously than ever into the ocean’s deep regions, exploiting the deep’s resources and placing its wealth of vibrant habitats at risk. Lisa Levin, a biological oceanographer at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, believes the vital functions provided by the deep sea—from carbon sequestration to nurturing fish stocks—are key to the health of the planet. Darkening of the Arctic

Satellite Data Reveal Rapid Darkening of the Arctic

The retreat of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean is diminishing Earth’s albedo, or reflectivity, by an amount considerably larger than previously estimated, according to researchers at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. As the sea ice melts, its white reflective surface is replaced by a relatively dark ocean surface. This diminishes the amount of sunlight being reflected back to space, causing the Earth to absorb an increasing amount of solar energy. Read More »

UC San Diego filmmaker brings years of broadcast journalism experience to classrooms around globe

Robert Hooper, a UC San Diego alumnus, has worked intensively in nations facing ethnic, religious and sectarian conflict. Hooper was recently awarded a two-year, $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of State for a project that enables students from four universities in Bangladesh to produce original documentary films that personify peace and tolerance in Bangladesh.
